New Year New Beginnings: We Are Moving Abroad!

The start of a new year often brings a sense of excitement and the opportunity for fresh beginnings, and that's just what it's about to be for my family and me. Imagine receiving the thrilling news of being selected for a new job position abroad. I've lived overseas before, but this time, it's a bit different; I'm going as a married woman, and we are going as a family. Moving to a new country, immersing ourselves in a different culture, and embarking on a life-changing adventure is both exhilarating and daunting. In this blog post, I'm discussing my process of moving abroad, from the initial excitement to the planning and preparation required for a successful transition. If you are moving abroad, the suggestions should help your relocation.

The Exciting News:

Receiving the news of being selected for a new job position abroad was a moment of pure joy and anticipation. I took some time to celebrate this milestone with friends and family with dinner and drinks and treated myself to a spa day this past weekend. We are embracing this exciting opportunity and are grateful to be able to do it together. We are allowing ourselves to dream and be open-minded about the adventures in our new chapter. Friends are already making plans to visit 🤩.

Research and Planning:

The initial excitement is settling, and it's time to dive into the practical aspects of moving abroad. I have been researching the country (IT'S GERMANY🎉), learning about the culture, customs, and language, and luckily for me, I've been there several times and have family that currently lives there. I don't have to do anything for visas or work permits because my agency will handle that. But if that's not your case, I recommend you look into that as part of your research. There is also a relocation team that will step me through this transition. Still, if that's not your case, I recommend creating a checklist of tasks that includes finding accommodations, arranging transportation, and managing finances. I have created a checklist to make this process easier; download yours free here

Financial Considerations:

Moving abroad can have financial implications, so assessing my budget and planning is crucial. I've done some light research on the cost of living in Germany, including housing, transportation, healthcare, and daily expenses. I've considered the potential changes in salary, taxes, and insurance coverage. I'd advise anyone to consult with a financial advisor to ensure you are well-prepared for the financial aspects of your move.

Sorting Out Logistics:

As the moving date approaches, I'll start organizing the logistics of the move. My agency is relocating us, but I recommend notifying your current employer of your departure and tying up any loose ends if this is not your situation. We are keeping our home in the U.S. and taking little with us. Still, you may consider selling or donating belongings you won't be taking with you—research international moving companies or shipping options to safely transport your belongings. Don't forget to inform your bank, utility providers, and any other relevant institutions of your address change.

Embracing the Cultural Experience:

Moving abroad is not just about the practicalities; it's also an opportunity to immerse yourself in a new culture and broaden your horizons. I plan to learn German; I've already begun practicing via Duolingo. Wo ist die Toilette (Where is the bathroom), that's an important one 🤣. I've been encouraging my husband and son to learn as well. I have also begun joining expat groups to connect with others who have made a similar move.

Emotional Preparation:

Moving abroad can be emotionally challenging, especially when leaving loved ones and familiar surroundings behind. I remember my Navy days, leaving my family behind for the first time, and heading to Guam when I was 17—those days prepared me. I'm going to miss my home, my family and friends. I plan to visit my family in Chicago and make some great memories before we leave. It's not forever; we will plan trips back and forth and stay connected through apps and Facetime. It may be more challenging for those moving solo for the first time, so embrace the excitement of starting anew. However, allow yourself to acknowledge and process any feelings of homesickness or adjustment.

Conclusion:

Moving abroad is an incredible opportunity for personal and professional growth. From the initial excitement to the research, planning, and logistics of the move, prepare yourself, take it all in, and enjoy this new chapter. You deserve it.
